DESIGNER'S NOTES

A striking Fox & Chave silk chiffon scarf that features elements from the painting Olive Trees painted in November 1889 by the Dutch post-impressionist Vincent Van Gogh (1853-1890)

Olive Trees is a standout in his series of 15 canvases dedicated to the subject. Driven by a fascination with the "'silver and blue' foliage against 'orange-coloured' earth, Van Gogh used these groves to explore emotional intensity through nature.

The version upon which this design is based is defined by its rhythmic, wavy outlines and gnarled trunks that appear to be dancing or struggling, a hallmark of Van Gogh's late 1889 style. His technique involves thick, impasto brushstrokes and vibrating complementary colors. Rather than mere landscapes, these works represent a stylised, expressive exaggeration of reality, capturing the turbulent energy of the artist’s mind during his stay in Saint-Rémy.
